The ability to listen — to really understand what someone else is trying to communicate — fundamentally affects a person’s ability to communicate with others. However, as important as it is, many people think they’re already good listeners or may not know specifically what to do to become better listeners. By learning the skills and behaviors of listening to understand, leaders can not only gather information and hear accurately, but also build relationships, show respect, empathize, and connect with others. Doing so will have a positive impact on their communication as a leader and in their relationships beyond work.

Discuss why it is essential to listen to understand
Describe the behaviors involved with listening to understand and the barriers to listening effectively
Focus on listening for facts, feelings, and values
Increase their ability to understand others through listening
